Pirates go 3-1 at Mt. SAC Tournament

GLENDORA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team kicked off its 2017 season with a solid 3-1 start at last weekend's Mt. San Antonio College Tournament, posting wins over Rio Hondo (20-6), Chaffey (23-8) and Ventura (16-8).

On Friday at co-host Citrus College, Coast made quick work of the Roadrunners in the opener, outscoring RHC 11-1 in the second half en route to the win.

Gabriele Simonti led the way with five goals, while Eduardo Wainberg and Skyler Chanove each added three goals.

In the afternoon matchup, Coast ripped off the first five goals of the match and led 12-3 at the half, never giving the Panthers a chance to get back into the contest.

Simonti, Jacob Petersen and Gerardo Garcia each had five goals for the Pirates, while Chanove and Andrew Holloran each chipped in three.

After a 14-8 loss on Saturday morning to Citrus, the Pirates wrapped things up with a solid 16-8 win over Ventura. Weinberg was a one-man machine for the OCC Pirates with a match-best nine goals, while Simonti added a pair.

In goal, Gavin Gray played in all four matches and racked up a combined 48 saves in the four contests.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup against rival Golden West (at GWC), beginning at 3 p.m.
