Pirates hold on for 17-16 win over Occidental College

LOS ANGELES --The Orange Coast College men's water polo team picked up a pair of late goals in the fourth quarter to pull out a 17-16 win over host Occidental College on Saturday in a nonconference matchup.

Trailing 16-15 with 1:24 left in the fourth, Gabriele Simonti sent a pass off to teammate Andrew Holloran, who scored an even-strength goal to tie things up at 16.

Gerardo Garcia came up with a big block on Occidental's next possession, giving OCC a chance to pull out the win. Finally, with 14 seconds left, Eduardo Wainberg found the opening needed to score tiebreaking goal, putting Coast up 17-16.

The Tigers had one final chance to tie things up, but Wainberg came up with a key block in the final seconds to preserve the win for the Pirates (4-2).

Weinberg finished with six goals to lead Coast, while Simonti added four goals and five steals and Skyler Chanove added three goals to go along with two steals.

In goal, Gavin Gray notched seven saves to preserve the win for Coast, who return to Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m.
