Pirates continue to shine; take 3-of-4 at Cuesta tourney

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- It was another successful tournament road trip for the Orange Coast College men's water polo team as the Pirates won 3-of-4 at the Cuesta College Men's Water Polo Tournament this past weekend.

In the opening matchup on Friday, Coast took on Sierra and used a strong fourth quarter to pull out a 13-8 win. Trailing 8-7 heading into the final quarter, the Pirates came alive with six goals to pull out the win. Jacob Petersen, Eduardo Wainberg and Gabriele Simonti each scored three goals for Coast, while Gerardo Garcia added a pair of goals.

After a last-minute goal by host Cuesta left the Pirates on the short end of a 7-6 decision in the Friday afternoon matchup, Coast bounced right back on Saturday and used an 8-goal opening quarter to roll past Cabrillo, 17-7. The balanced offense continued to shine for the Pirates, with Garcia and Andrew Halloran with three goals each and Wainberg, Nicholas Ly and Skyler Chanove with two goals apiece.

The successful tournament was wrapped up with a solid 16-8 win over Ventura College, bringing the Pirates' 2017 record to 13-6 overall (3-1 in Orange Empire Conference action).

Against the VC Pirates, Simonti, Halloran, Garcia and Angel Rosado each scored three goals for Coast, while Peterson, Wainberg, Chanove and Ryland Olson each scored one goal.

For the weekend, OCC goalkeeper Gavin Gray was on top of his game, earning three wins and notching 20 saves throughout the tournament.

Coast will host Grossmont and Ventura for a three-team, one-day mini-tournament on Saturday at the Pirates' aquatic complex.
