Pirates split a pair at Cerritos tournament

NORWALK -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went 1-1 in a pair of matchups on Friday over at Cerritos College. OCC fell to L.A. Valley College, 11-9, before topping host Cerritos, 10-8.

In the opener vs. LAVC, Eduardo Wainberg had three goals, two assists and a pair of steals to lead the Pirates, while Gerardo Garcia added a pair of goals to go along with two steals. Additional goals were tossed in by Gabriele Simonti, Skyler Chanove, Andrew Halloran and Jacob Petersen.

In the afternoon matchup against the Falcons, both teams battled back and forth with Coast holding an 8-7 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Goals by Garcia and Simonti helped push the Pirates' lead to 10-7 and from there, the OCC defense and goalie Gavin Gray held the Falcons to just one fourth-quarter goal to preserve the win.

Wainberg was the offensive leader again with four goals and an assist, while Petersen added two goals, while Chanove and Halloran tossed in one goal.

Gray, who has been a strong final line of defense for the Pirates all season, finished the two matches with a combined 12 saves as the Pirates improved to 6-3 for the season. 

Coast returns to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 3 p.m.
