Women’s Sand Volleyball Added to Coast Sports Roster

Orange Coast College's newest sport team, women's sand volleyball, will be kicking off their season on Friday, March 6, at noon as they take on Antelope Valley College at Huntington State Beach.

OCC will use the sand courts at Pacific Coast Highway and Newland Street. The match is expected to last an hour or so, and all are invited to a bonfire following; hot dogs, s'mores and soda will be provided.

There is a $15 parking fee to park all day at the state beach's Magnolia Street entrance. Hourly parking also is available by entering at Beach Boulevard. Visitors must use an app on a smart phone or call a toll free number to pay.

Women's Sand Volleyball is in its first season as a California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) recognized intercollegiate sport and 18 teams are participating this season. There are four divisions in the state, and OCC is in the Misty May Treanor Division. An additional 20 teams are participating as club teams, with the hope that they will be fully sanctioned in the future.

Coast's team is led by indoor head coach, Chuck Cutenese, and assisted by Dr. Bill Brown and Karlee Riggs.

Brown is a world-class volleyball coach and former member of the Association of Volleyball Professionals. He also is a board certified chiropractor and has coached, trained and treated some of the best volleyball players in the world, including Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May Treanor and Rich Lambourne.

Riggs, who was OCC's athlete of the year in 2012-13, just came off of playing the last two years for the University of Hawaii's sand volleyball team where she helped lead her team to a third place finish at the American Volleyball Coaches Association Collegiate National Championships last year in Gulf Shores, Ala.
