Pirates walk all over Rustlers, 10-2, in five innings

COSTA MESA -- It was literally a "walk" in the park for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates rolled to a 10-2, five-inning win over visiting Golden West College on Monday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

The Pirates (5-10, 4-5 in OEC) took advantage of SIXTEEN walks thrown by GWC pitchers and used a seven-run seventh inning to finally make the Rustlers (5-16, 1-7) pay.

Taylor Gallo, Linnea Donahugh and Anna Marin were walked three times each, while Gretchen Hom and Emma Silvestri each received two free passes. The only OCC player to NOT receive a walk -- Ariel Fernandez -- went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.

That was more than enough offense for OCC starter Montana Roelvink (4-6), who allowed two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings before Cayla Ezelle helped her teammate out by coming in and retiring her lone batter on one pitch, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

Coast received nine walks over the first three innings, but struggled to string along some hits with the free passes and led the Rustlers by only one run, 2-1.

GWC tied the game at 2 in the top of the fourth before Coast sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on just three hits and six walks.

Finally, in the fifth, an RBI-single by Ezelle plated OCC's 10th run, scoring Donahugh, who walked to lead off the frame.

Coast will return to the OCC Softball Complex on Wednesday against Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m.
