Pirates stun Mounties with 2-0 upset win!

WALNUT -- The Orange Coast College softball team picked up a HUGE statement win on Friday with a 2-0 victory over the state's No. 1 ranked team -- Mt. San Antonio.

The Pirates (2-1), dealing with an inconsistent schedule thanks to some weather issues, overcame that as well as a powerhouse program in the Mounties (5-2).

OCC pitcher Angela Whitmer (2-1) went the distance and silenced the Mountie bats for seven innings, allowing five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

After five scoreless innings, the Pirates broke the deadlock in the sixth. A one-out double by Isabel McElroy (2-for-4) was followed by a fly ball off the bat of Jasmyn Morales that was misplayed by the Mounties, allowing McElroy to score. Two batters later, Natalie Lowthers singled to bring in Morales, putting OCC up, 2-0.

Whitmer, who earned 3C2A Pitcher of the Week honors for her her efforts, wiggled out of danger in the bottom of the sixth when a walk, a single and a double somehow resulted in NO runs.

More stress in the 7th for Whitmer and the Pirates when a single and an error put the tying runs on base with two outs. The next batter singled to center, but McElroy came up firing and threw out the lead runner trying to score to end the threat and the game.

Coast will return to the OCC Softball Complex on Wednesday against Long Beach City College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
