Pirates complete sweep of Hawks with 9-2 win

COSTA MESA -- The fun and the winning continues for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates picked up their 10th win in their first 12 games with a 9-2 victory over visiting Santiago Canyon on Friday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Isabel McElroy went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Pirates (10-2, 3-0 in the Orange Empire Conference), who earned the series sweep over the Hawks (5-11, 0-3). Reyna Hernandez clubbed a three-run home run, Melissa Hanson went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Ayallah Farley knocked in a pair of late runs for Coast.

The steady right arm of Angela Whitmer continued to keep the Hawks at bay as she went the distance to record her 7th win over the year. She allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Hanson's two RBI came in the bottom of the first, when she came through with a two-out single up the middle, which scored McElroy and  Jasmyn Morales to put Coast up 2-0.

Hernandez stepped up and launched her 3-run shot in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Pirates up 5-0 and before the inning was over, a run-scoring grounder off the bat of Natalie Lowthers made it 6-0.

SCC would find some runs with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings before a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Morales, Farley's two-run double and a run-scoring error capped off the scoring for the Pirates.

Coast will begin its next three-game series at Saddleback College on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., with both teams playing at OCC on Thursday at 2 p.m. The series finale will be back at Saddleback on Friday, also at 2 p.m.
