Pirates cruise to 13-4, six-inning win over SB Valley

COSTA MESA -- With one, big, grand-slam of a swing of the bat from Reyna Hernandez, Friday's nonconference game with San Bernardino Valley came to a sudden end as the Pirates walked off the Wolverines in six innings, 13-4, on Friday at the OCC Softball Complex.

After being one run shy of a run-rule win after four innings, Coast (7-2) suddenly saw the game much closer as the Wolverines (2-9) scored three runs in the fifth to make it an 8-4 lead.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Coast scored five -- the last four coming in on Hernandez's grand slam -- to finish off the Wolverines an inning early.

Natalie Lowthers went 2-for-2 with four runs and an RBI for Coast. Lydia Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Lexia Martinez added two hits, a run and two RBI.

Angela Whitmer minimized 11 SBVC hits and allowed just four runs with no walks and four strikeouts to pick up her fourth win of the season.

OCC's next home game will be the Orange Empire Conference opener, as the Pirates host Santiago Canyon on Tuesday, beginning at 2 p.m.
