Pirates keep rolling with 5-2 win over Dons

COSTA MESA -- In spite of some adventures on the bases, the Orange Coast College softball team found a way to grind out a 5-2 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Santa Ana on Thursday at the Pirate Softball Stadium.

Angela Whitmer picked up her 12th win of the year (12-4) to extend OCC's win streak to three in a row and improve the Pirates' record to 21-11 overall, 11-5 in the OEC. Whitmer went the distance and allowed two early runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Coast trailed early on the Dons (14-20, 6-11) after a two-run home run off the bat of Sean Casey, but the Pirates responded with a run in the second and back-to-back two-run frames in the third and fourth to earn the victory.

In the bottom of the second, with runners on first and third and nobody out, the Pirates stole a run when Lexia Martinez stole second and the throw allowed Reyna Hernandez to scamper home with the first OCC run of the game.

With plenty of baserunners on the paths thanks to eight Pirate walks, Coast collected a big hit in the bottom of the third as Melissa Hanson drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single up the middle, putting Coast up, 3-2.

A walk by McKenzie Koshi and an infield single and stolen base by Natalie Lowthers put runners on second and third for Coast in the bottom of the fourth. Jasmyn Morales came through with a run-scoring sac fly to center, which scored Koshi and sent Lowthers to third. Erica Rodriguez capped off the scoring in the fourth with an RBI-single to right to score Lowthers and give Coast a 5-2 advantage.

That would be all that Whitmer would need as she got better as the game progressed, retiring nine of the final 11 batters she faced to keep the Dons off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Hanson finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBI, whilie Lowthers added two hits and a run scored.

Game 3 of this three-game set will take place at Santa Ana College on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Thursday against Golden West for Sophomore Day, beginning at 2 p.m.
