Pirates keep on winning! OCC tames Tigers, 5-3

RIVERSIDE -- Make that TEN straight wins for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates toppled Riverside City College, 5-3, on Tuesday at RCC in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Lydia Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a run scored for Coast (14-2, 6-0 in the OEC), while Natalie Lowthers added two hits and a run scored. Driving in those crucial runs was the tandem of Ayallah Farley and Reyna Hernandez, who each collected a pair of RBI.

Pitcher Angela Whitmer collected her ninth win of the year, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Riverside's leadoff hitter, Sheila Fernanda Cano, went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI, while the rest of the RCC lineup went a collected 2-for-21 against Whitmer.

Coast jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Tigers (7-17, 1-6) through the first three innings. In the top of the second, McKenzie Koshi connected on an RBI-double, while in the third, an RBI-grounder by Hernandez and a two-run double by Farley capped off Coast's three-run frame.

Cano got Riverside on the scoreboard with a solo HR in the sixth, but an RBI-sacrifice fly by Hernandez pushed the lead back to four at 5-1.

Riverside used a seventh-inning, two-run home run by Cano to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Whitmer buckled down and retired the next batter to end the game.

The Pirates and Tigers will play Game 2 of this week's series at OCC on Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m.
