Cold start stymies Pirates in Coast Christmas Classic opener

COSTA MESA -- It was a first quarter to forget for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates dropped the opener of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic, 82-57, on Monday night inside the Peterson Gym.

The Pirates (0-8) managed to hit just 2-of-14 from the floor in the opening quarter and were outscored by the Panthers (9-6), 26-8. The rest of the way, OCC hung tough with Chaffey (56-49, Panthers) the rest of the way.

Sydney Briggs tied a Coast Christmas Classic record with eight 3-pointers en route to a game-high 30 points for the Pirates, while Aubriona Mathis added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Briggs' eight treys equaled the amount hit by Palomar College's Kendall Crosby last season. Her 30-point performance was her second straight game with 30-or-more points after her 33-point night against Santa Barbara on Dec. 8.

For the Panthers, Jazmine Smith came off of the bench to score 20 points, while Jessica Pantoja, Kahla Badibanga, Jasmine Burley and Briana Sullivan each added 12.
