Strong second half comeback falls just short for Pirates in loss to Chargers

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team gave first-place Cypress College a bit of a jolt, but a late comeback by the Pirates came up short in a 68-62 Orange Empire Conference loss on Wednesday night.

Trailing by as many as 18 points midway through the third quarter, the Pirates managed to outscore the Chargers 34-26 in the second half and pulled to within just five points in the final minute of play. But the hosts managed to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Aubriona Mathis had a monster night for the Pirates with 22 points and 18 rebounds, while teammate Sydney Driggs led all scorers with 26 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

Gabrielle Carbajal led the Chargers with 17 points, while Hannah Avila-McArthur anchored the middle with a team-best 15 rebounds.

Coast will return to action on Friday at home against Fullerton, beginning at 5 p.m.
