Pirates double-up on Lasers for 4-2 road win

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team is finally back on the road to recovery and the results are beginning to show it as the Pirates picked up a 4-2 Orange Empire Conference win against Irvine Valley College on Tuesday at IVC.

Hamstrung with injuries to key players through most of the season, the Pirates (4-6-1, 1-2-0 in OEC) are returning to a full roster, allowing for better matchups and more depth at every position.

Coast jumped out to an early lead and never allowed the Lasers (3-6-2, 0-3-0) an opportunity to even things back up.

Before the halfway point of the first half, the Pirates had already jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. In the tenth minute, a pass from Iran Enriquez found its way to Karryn Henderson, who scored to put OCC up, 1-0. In the 17th minute, it was Lynette Romero's turn as she took a nice pass from Savannah Alday and found the back of the net to give Coast its two-goal lead.

Just two minutes later, the Lasers responded as Amanda Kutcher scored to make it 2-1 off an assist by Sheida Suazo.

It stayed that way until the 77th minute, when Megan Tingle took a pass from Romero and buried her shot into the net, giving Coast an all-important two-goal cushion. IVC quickly responded again when Kutcher scored her second goal of the game just three minutes later, trimming the Pirate advantage back to a single goal at 3-2.

But Veronica Zambrano ended all hopes of a Laser comeback as she scored unassisted in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring.

Pirate goalkeeper Bryana Esparza notched four saves, while IVC's Heather Miller tallied six.

The Pirates will return home and take on rival Golden West on Friday at 3 p.m. at the OCC Soccer Complex.
