Pirates battle Dons to 3-3 tie

SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team took advantage of a pair of penalty kick opportunities and salvaged a 3-3 tie on Tuesday against Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference matchup played at SAC.

The Pirates (5-8-2, 2-4-1), playing without the services of goalkeeper Bryana Esparza, pieced together their shorthanded lineup and rode the foot of Lynette Romero to the draw. Romero scored all three goals for OCC, including the final two scores of the match, which came on penalty kicks.

OCC scored first when Kaitlyn Arciniega set up Romero for her first of the afternoon in the 15th minute, putting the Pirates up, 1-0. But the Dons (7-5-1, 1-5-1) responded with three straight goals to lead 3-1. SAC outshot the Pirates 15-4 for the match, but several attempts missed the Coast goal frame.

The Dons were called for a hand-ball inside the OCC scoring area, giving the Pirates a PK opportunity and Romero buried her opportunity, cutting the deficit to one at 3-2 in the 35th minute.

It stayed that way until the 89th minute before a Coast player was fouled inside the scoring area, giving the Pirates another PK chance. Again Romero stepped up and again, Romero found the back of the net, tying the match in the final minute of action.

The goalkeeper combination of Nikki Crane and Karryn Henderson each had three saves for the Pirates.

OCC returns to action on Friday at home against Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m.
