Pirates silence Rustlers, 2-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team picked up a goal in each half and kept rival Golden West at bay as the Pirates cruised to a 2-0 Orange Empire Conference win on Friday afternoon at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The Pirates (5-6-1, 2-2-0) picked up the first goal of the match when Karryn Henderson found some open space and fed a pass to Lynette Romero, who buried her shot attempt into the back of the net in the 33rd minute, putting Coast up, 1-0.

It stayed that way until the 84th minute, when Veronica Zambrano launched a corner kick that eluded a pair of Rustler defenders before Emma Lies worked through another pair of GWC players for the loose ball and scored into the left-side of the net, giving the Pirates the insurance goal needed to end a thought of a Rustler comeback.

Bryana Espraza picked up the shutout win for the Pirates with nine saves. GWC's Dominique Valadez and Ashlee each gave up and goal and combined for two saves.

The Pirates will head out to the OC Great Park in Irvine to take on Saddleback College on Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m OCC's next home match will be on Friday, Oct. 25 against Fullerton, also at 3 p.m.
