Pirates control play, topple Lasers, 3-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team put on a solid, all-around performance and controlled play from the opening whistle en route to a 3-0 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Irvine Valley College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

With possession in favor of the Pirates throughout the contest, Coast (6-5-2 overall, 4-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) scored early and tacked on a couple of second-half goals to pull away from the Lasers (7-6, 2-4).

In the 18th minute, Litzy Morales fed a nice pass over to Stephanie Serrato, whose kicked in a rebound off of her original shot to put the Pirates up, 1-0.

The Lasers managed six shots on frame, but none were of any high-danger opportunities. Pirate goalkeeper Leila Saldic was a perfect 6-for-6 in preserving the shutout.

In the 61st minute of play, the Pirates were awarded a penalty shot and Morales took the shot, which banked in off of the goal post and over the goal line, putting Coast up, 2-0.

Less than five minutes later, Grace Graham hooked in a corner kick that found its way into the back of the net to cap off the scoring in the 65th minute.

With the win, the Pirates remain in the upper tier of the OEC standings, just two points behind a three-way log jam, consisting of Cypress (4-0-2), Saddleback (4-0-2) and Santiago Canyon (4-0-2).

OCC will host the first-place Hawks on Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m.
