Pirates grind out 1-0 win over rival Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- In a matchup that saw very few scoring opportunities, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team took advantage of one and that was enough to hold off Golden West, 1-0, on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Both teams struggled to get much going against the other's defense, but finally, in the 73rd minute, Leena Torres found some midfield space and fed a pass to Stephanie Serrato, who carried the ball down the left side, past the GWC defense and ripped a shot past the Rustlers' goalkeeper for the lone goal of the match.

From there, the Pirates (7-5-3, 5-2-1 in the Orange Empire Conference), kept the Rustlers (4-7-2, 2-5-1) away from any dangerous scoring opportunities the rest of the contest, led by a strong, all-around defensive effort.

With the win, OCC stays in the upper tier of the OEC standings and will return to action on Tuesday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's final home match of the regular season will take place on Friday against Santa Ana College, also at 3 p.m.
