Coast women split tri-meet with El Camino, Cuyamaca

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team earned a split in Friday's tri-meet held at OCC, topping Cuyamaca 88-43, but falling to El Camino 77-73.

Raeanna Cortez earned a pair of victories for the Pirates. She edged out ECC's Courtney Manning to win the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 24.49 seconds. In the 1,500, Cortez was the lone sub-five-minute runner with a winning time of 4:58.18.

In the 3,000, Carmille Garcia was the top college-based runner with a time of 10:59.86. Former OCC standout Grace Adams-Handy cleared the field with a 10:29.85.

In the high jump, Coast finished 1-2 as Sabrina Howe cleared 4-feet, 10 1/4 inches to win, while September Rodriguez finished second with a jump of 4-8 1/4.

In the pole vault, Cassie Nitz cleared 8-0 to win for the Pirates.

In was a 1-2-3 finish in the hammer throw for OCC as Catalina Lay edged out Ashley Tupailesa and Cassandra Jacobs with a winning mark of 116-11. Tupailesa was second with a 116-3, while Jacobs (115-3) took third.

Jacobs returned the favor in the javelin throw, topping a pair of Pirates with a winning throw of 92-7. Howe finished second at 84-8, while Morgan Smith (82-4) took third.

The Pirates will return to the OCC Track Complex on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference meet featuring Golden West, Santiago Canyon and Fullerton, beginning at 1 p.m.
