Pirates send six to State Meet

ANTELOPE VALLEY -- Orange Coast College track and field will have six competitors -- three men and three women -- up in San Mateo for state following their solid performances at last weekend's Southern California Regional finals, held at Antelope Valley College.

On the women's side, Carmille Garcia performed well in the 3,000-meter steeplechase overcame the blazing temps at AVC to finish third overall with a time of 11:43.5.

Standout jumper Sabrina Howe earned a trip to San Mateo by finishing fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-3.

And, in the 1,500, Raeanna Cortez qualified for state with a sixth-place time of 4:51.03.

In addition to these six athletes, there are two athletes on the fringe of qualifying -- Jace Hinesly in the 3,000 steeplechase and Karen Silvas in the 1,500. Both would earn a trip to the State Meet if there are any athletes who do not participate in their event.

On the men's side, OCC's top finisher came in the hammer throw, where Austin Pollok earned a third-place mark with a throw of 170-feet, 6-inches.

In the decathlon, Cameron Pizzica used several top-three finishes to finish fifth overall with a score of 5,938 points.

And, in the 10,000 meters, distance specialist Jose Ortiz braved the inland heat and finished seventh overall with a time of 33 minutes, 19.16 seconds.

The California Community College Athletic Association State Track and Field Meet will take place Friday and Saturday at the College of San Mateo.
