Howe, Silvas lead Pirates past Gauchos, Hawks

MISSION VIEJO -- Sabrina Howe won four individual events and Karen Silvas claimed victory in two to lead the Orange Coast College women's track team to a convincing win over Saddleback and Santiago Canyon in a reschedule tri-meet on Friday.

The Pirates outscored the Hawks 118-30 and the Gauchos 104-41 in a meet that was postponed on Feb. 8 due to rainy weather.

Howe was a winner in four different events, claiming first place in the high jump (4-feet-9), the 110-meter high hurdles (16.64 seconds), the long jump (16-8) and triple jump (34 6 1/2).

Silvas led the way for the Pirates in the distance events, winning both the 1,500 (4:50.63) and the 3,000 (10:36.33). In the 1,500, she outlasted Saddleback's Evonna Ramirez and won by just over one second. In the 3,000, it wasn't quite as close as Silvas dominated the race and won by nearly 20 seconds over Ramirez.

Other individual wins for the Pirates were turned in by September Rodriguez in the 400 (1:02.03), Raeanna Cortez in the 800 (2:21.31) and Cassandra Jacobs in the javelin throw (108, 9 1/2).

In the 400 relay, the OCC team of Rodriguez, Brianna Murray, Veronika Moralieva and Manasha Arellano edged out the Hawks and won with a time of 51.69. SCC took second at 51.79.

In the 1,600 relay, Leanne Allen joined Rodriguez, Moralieva and Arellano and clocked in with a winning time of 4:07.42.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 1 p.m.
