Pirates top Santiago Canyon, Fullerton, Golden West in four-way meet

COSTA MESA -- The friendly confines of the Orange Coast College Track Complex proved comforting for the host Pirates as they topped Santiago Canyon (104-40), Golden West (91-62) and Fullerton (88-55) in a four-way meet on Friday afternoon.

Coast was led by sophomore Karen Silvas, who topped the field in two events -- OCC's lone double-winner. She was the lone sub-five-minute runner in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of 4 minutes, 58.51 seconds. In the 3,000, she edged out teammate Carmille Garcia to finish first with a time of 10:54.63, just ahead of Garcia's 10:57.52.

In the 800, it was another close call as OCC's Raeanna Cortez edged out SCC's Lindsey Meng (2:26.18) at the tape for a winning time of 2:25.86.

Sabrina Howe won the high jump, clearing 4-feet, 9 3/4 inches in the fewest attempts.

In the discus, Ashley Tupailesa out-threw Fullerton's Theresa Rocha to place first with a mark of 106-10 3/4.

A major point-producer for the Pirates came in the hammer throw, where Coast finished 1-2-3, led by Catalina Lay's winning throw of 118-5 3/4. Teammate Cassandra Jacobs (110-6 3/4) finished second, while Tupailesa (101 3 3/4) took third.

The Pirates will head to Long Beach State for an multi-school invitational March 1-2.
