Cortez sets the pace for Pirates at State Meet

SAN MATEO -- The 2013 track and field season came to an end for Orange Coast College, but the Pirates finished things up with some solid performances this past weekend at the California Community College Athletic Association State Meet, held at the College of San Mateo.

On the women's side, Raeanna Cortez competed in the 1,500 meters and bettered her Regional Meet time by nearly three seconds, finishing seventh in the state with a time of 4:48.09.

Teammate Karen Silvas joined Cortez on the track for the 1,500 and came in ninth with a time of 4:55.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, Carmille Garcia finished eighth in the state with a time of 11:52.98, while in the high jump, Saprina Howe also finished eighth with a jump of 5-feet, 1 3/4-inches.

On the men's side, sophomore Austin Pollok topped his Regional Meet mark by over three feet and finished fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 173-3 1/2.

In the decathlon, sophomore Cameron Pizzica took on the best all-around athletes the state had to offer and finished eighth overall with 6,069 points. Topping his solid performance was a first-place mark of 14-5 1/4 in the pole vault and a fourth-place jump in the high jump (6-3/4).
