Pirates open 2014 with wins over Gauchos, Hawks in OEC tri-meet

COSTA MESA -- The 2014 season is officially underway and for the Orange Coast College women's track and field team, Friday's Orange Empire Conference tri-meet with Saddleback and Santiago Canyon concluded with two OCC team wins.

Coast topped the Gauchos, 117-36 and the Hawks, 116-37 with several Pirate performers leading the way.

The early-season MVP for the Pirates was sophomore standout Sabrina Howe, took home the top time in both the 100 hurdles (16.68) and the 400 hurdles (1:10.47). Howe also took care of business in the high jump (5-feet, 2 1/4 inches), long jump (16-3 3/4) and triple jump (33-10). Then, for good measure, she also placed first in the javelin throw with a mark of 80-5. 

It was a 1-2-3 finish for the Pirates in the 400-meter run, led by Brenda Perez, who topped the field with a time of 1 minute, 2.78 seconds.

In the 800, Leanne Allen took care of business and crossed the finish line with a winning time of 2:27.57.

Coast dominated the 1,500 with a 1-2-3-4-5 finish as Allen led the way with a time of 5:00.46.

In the 3,000, OCC's Kristie Son clocked in with a winning time of 11:09.38.

OCC's standout hurdler, Sabrina Howe, took home the top time in both the 100 hurdles (16.68) and the 400 hurdles (1:10.47). Howe also took care of business in the high jump (5-feet, 2 1/4 inches), long jump (16-3 3/4) and triple jump (33-10).

OCC's relay teams went a perfect 2-for-2, winning the 4x100 (52.47) as well as the 4x400 (4:14.63).

The Pirates will host Cuyamaca and El Camino on Friday in a nonconference tri-meet, beginning at 3 p.m.
