Pirates top Dons, fall to Tigers in quad meet

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team topped Santa Ana (131-13), but were edged by Riverside (89-64) during Friday's quad meet with the Dons, Tigers and Santiago Canyon.

Leanne Allen continued her standout season with a strong win in the 1,500 meters, topping the field with a time of 4 minutes, 46.8 seconds. She later followed that up with a win in the 800 (2:14.95) as well as the javelin throw (100 feet, 1 1/4 inches).

The OCC women's 1,600 relay team outran a pair of teams from RCC and SCC to win with a time of 4:00.56.

In the hammer throw, Ashley Tupailesa cruised to a win with a throw of 139-10, a full six feet farther than runner-up Olivia Kana from Riverside (133-4 1/2).

A pair of OCC jumpers -- Sabrina Howe and Nikki Puerner -- topped the competition in the long jump. Howe topped the field with a mark of 17-5, while Puerner, came in second with a 16-8 3/4.

The Pirates will return to the OCC track on Friday in the 2014 Coast Classic, beginning at 10 a.m.
