Pirates claim second at Coast Classic

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team finished second overall with 118 points during Friday's 2014 Coast Classic Invitational.

The Pirates were edged out by El Camino, which finished with 122 points in the 10-team meet. Following Coast were Glendale (105), Vanguard University (100) and Concordia (70).

Sophomore standout Leanne Allen claimed victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 22.74 seconds, nearly 30 seconds faster than runner-up Haley Heinemann of El Camino (11:51.72).

Allen's victory was the lone top spot for the Pirates, but several top-three spots were claimed by the hosts, including Nikki Puerner in the 400 (2nd, 1:00.55), Raeanna Cortez in the 1,500 (3rd, 4:44.6), Karen Silvas in the 5,000 (2nd, 19:06.04), Guadalupe Cantoran in the 5,000 (3rd, 19:11.25), Ashley Tupailesa in the discus (3rd, 109 feet, 1 3/4 inches) and hammer throw (2nd, 126-3) and Morgan Johnson in the hammer throw (3rd, 119-9 1/2).

Coast will travel to Mt. San Antonio College for the two-day SoCal Multi-Event Championships, which begin on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
