Pirates open with a sweep of the Roadrunners

COSTA MESA -- It was a perfect 3-for-3 for Orange Coast College athletics against Rio Hondo on Wednesday. After wins by both soccer teams, the Pirate women's volleyball team went to work on the Roadrunners and walked out of the Peterson Gym with a three-set sweep, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14.

Following the departure of standout hitter Karlee Riggs (University of Hawaii), the 2013 Pirates will be using depth as their main weapon and they showcased that against the Roadrunners (2-1).

Four freshmen -- Sierra Brown, Kayla Mayer, Megan Rawlings and Kellie Kleszcz -- each notched six kills for the Pirates (1-0). Setter Megan Ritchie dished out 26 assists and the OCC defense, which posted 54 digs in the match, was led by Brown with 12 and Mayer and Carina Perez with nine.

Andrea Velasco led the Roadrunners with six kills and four aces, while temmmate Makena Schildmeyer also ripped six kills. Defensively, Kimberly Hong led the way with nine digs.

In the opening set, OCC blew things open with a 12-0 run as Kleszcz and Rawlings each picked up a pair of kills and Perez, notched a pair of aces to highlight the run.

It was more of the same in second set as a 7-0 run pushed a 10-7 lead into a 17-7 advantage for the Pirates, helping the hosts grab a two-set lead in the match.

Coast fell behind 9-3 early in the third set before closing the match out on a 22-5 run.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Southwestern College (5 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday, Sept. 15 against San Bernardino Valley (5 p.m.).
