Pirates make quick work of Wolverines

COSTA MESA -- It took less than an hour for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to win its third match of the season, a 25-13, 25-8, 25-7 sweep over the visiting San Bernardino Valley Wolverines on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Hayley Martin led the Pirates (3-0) with nine kills, while Angelique Scarantino added eight. In fact, 10 different OCC players recorded at least one kill in the match.

Anaia Whitehead led the Wolverines (0-6) with four kills.

The points came fast and furious for the Pirates the entire night. Coast opened the first set with a 16-3 run and never looked back.

In the second set, both teams traded points early on before OCC turned on the jets and closed things out with a 15-0 run.

In the finale used runs of 6-0, 4-0 and 10-0 to pull away from the Wolverines, with Martin and Scarantino leading the way.

Setters Megan Ritchie (11 assists) and Nadja V'Soske (19 assists) distributed the offense to practically the entire team, while the OCC defense was led by Kiana Nicio, who notched 26 digs.

Coast will be on the road for the next two matches -- at Glendale on Thursday (6 p.m.) and at Pasadena on Friday (3 p.m.). From there, OCC will return home and open Orange Empire Conference play against Saddleback, beginning at 6 p.m.
