Pirates sweep past Dons

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team ended the first half of the Orange Empire Conference schedule on the right foot, sweeping past visiting Santa Ana College, 25-16, 25-18, 25-13, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

The Pirates (8-3 overall, 3-3 in OEC) saw several different lineup combinations against the Dons (3-11, 0-6) and all showed signs of success.

Kayla Mayer led the offense with 10 kills and added nine digs, while Hayley Martin added seven kills and Megan Rawlings chipped in five kills.

Kiana Nicio led the defense with 11 digs, while Megan Ritchie dished out 26 assists.

Danielle Goldowski led the Dons with six kills.

After a slow start, the Pirates broke free from the Dons in the opening set, using a 13-3 run to grab a 16-5 advantage. Santa Ana would get to within six at 17-11 but would get no further as the Pirates cruised from there.

Santa Ana used a pair of kills from Michelle Nguyen and Esther Arroyo to stay strong with the Pirates and actually carried a 12-11 lead before seven straight points by OCC gave the lead back to the Pirates.

The Dons would get to within a pair at 20-18 before a pair of Kellie Kleszcz kills helped spark a 5-0 run to end the second set.

Martin's strong serving (four aces) helped jump-start the third set for the Pirates as they took a 9-1 lead and never looked back.

Coast will open up the second half of OEC play at Cypress College on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. OCC's next home match will be Friday, Nov. 1 against Fullerton, also at 7 p.m.
