Season ends for Pirates in playoff loss to Griffins

GROSSMONT -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team gave the No. 2 team in the Southern California a bit of a scare, but it wasn't enough as the Pirates fell at Grossmont College in four sets on Tuesday night in the Southern California Regional playoffs.

Coast evened the match at a set apiece before the second-seeded Griffins clamped down and advanced to the second round with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-13 win over the 15th-seeded Pirates.

Sierra Brown led the Pirates (12-8) with 13 kills, while Kayla Mayer added nine and Kellie Kleszcz chipped in five. Carina Perez anchored OCC's defense with 14 digs, while Kiana Nicio added 11 and Angelique Scarantino contributed 10. Setter Megan Ritchie notched 27 assists.

For the Griffins (26-3), Simone Henderson had 14 kills and 10 blocks (three solo), while Megan Kurz added 12 kills and 12 digs. Setter Lauren Hays dished out 41 assists to go along with seven kills and five blocks in the win.
