Pirates go 3-1 in opening week

COSTA MESA -- It was a busy opening week for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as the Pirates hosted two days' worth of quad matches inside the Peterson Gym.

On Wednesday, the Pirates hosted Rio Hondo in the opener and fell to the visiting Roadrunners, 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 26-28, 15-13. Coast had its offense shared by many players, including Breanna Gardner, Hannah Del Barto and Tileree Johnson, who each had 10 kills. Sierra Lim had a team-best 17 digs, while Measha Lindstrand dished out 21 assists.

In the second match of the afternoon, the Pirates swept past Glendale College, 25-16, 26-24, 28-26. Gardner led the way with 14 kills, while Del Barto added 13 kills and nine digs. Lim again anchored the defense with 17 digs, while Enjelica Giattli paced the offense with 35 assists.

On Friday, Coast opened its quad with a straight-set win over San Bernardino Valley, 25-14, 25-10, 25-15. The offensive trio of Gardner, Del Barto and Johnson combined for 19 kills, Lim again led the defense with 11 digs and Lindstrand made the most of her one set with a game-best 11 assists.

In the nightcap, the Pirates were again pushed to five sets, but this time, Coast came out on top against Citrus, 18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12.

Highlighting the finale was an impressive, 41-dig performance by Lim, the third-best for one match in school history. Gardner came up big with 26 kills, while Del Barto added 15 and Aubrey St. Laurent contributed 10. Lindstrand had 28 assists, while teammate Megan Ritchie added 18 helpers.

Coast will travel to Cerritos College on Friday for another quad doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. against Victor Valley College.
