Pirates swept by Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team was swept by visiting Golden West College, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
Breanna Gardner led the Pirates (9-16, 4-11 in conference) with nine kills and 13 digs, while Aubrey St. Laurent added eight kills. Defensively, Hannah Del Barto was strong for Coast with a team-high 22 digs, while teammate Sierra Lim added 13 digs. Setter Enjelica Glattli dished out 17 assists.
Kate Stanjevich led the Rustlers (16-4, 12-3) with 15 kills.
After a few back-and-forth points for each team, Golden West took control of the opening set with a 13-3 run, putting the Rustlers in front, 14-7. Coast would get back to within four at 16-12 before the Rustlers used a 4-0 run to pull and way and cruise to a first-set victory.
Coast used a strong start from Gardner (three kills, one ace) to stay within a point of GWC at 12-11 before the Rustlers grabbed control of the second set with a 6-1 run. A Gardner kill and a Lim ace pulled OCC to within four at 18-14 before the Rustlers closed things out with a 7-2 run.
Setter/hitter Megan Ritchie showed off some strong serves to start the third set as the Pirates jumped out to an 8-0 advantage. During that run, a pair of kills by Gardner and three kills by St. Laurent put the Pirates in control of things.
But, the Rustlers regrouped and began to chip away into the advantage. Trailing, 18-14, GWC used a pair of kills by Stanjevich, a kill by Jasmine Gonzalez and a block by Melissa Martinez to even the set at 18.
Coast bounced back with a pair of points to take a 20-18 lead, but GWC finished strong, ripping off seven straight points to complete the three-set sweep.
The Pirates will wrap up the regular season at home on Wednesday night against Santa Ana College, beginning at 6 p.m.
