Pirates open head-to-head with straight-set win over Hawks

COSTA MESA -- In the first-ever matchup between Orange Coast College and Santiago Canyon College in women's volleyball, it was the host Pirates to take the early series lead with a straight-set victory on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Breanna Gardner had 13 kills to lead the Pirates (7-6, 2-1 in conference) past the Hawks, 25-9, 25-19, 25-13, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup. Aubrey St. Laurent added nine kills, while Hannah Del Barto chipped in eight kills. Sierra Lim was a defensive vacuum for OCC, leading the way with 17 digs, while setter Enjelica Glattli dished out 27 assists to go along with nine digs.

For the Hawks (2-6, 0-3), Riley Hausner had 10 kills.

In the opening set, the Hawks hung tough with their more experienced opponents and trailed by just four points at 12-8. But from there, the Pirates turned up the pressure and ripped of 13 of the next 14 points to pull away from SCC. Four kills and a strong string of serves from Glattli helped spark the late-set onslaught.

Both teams went back and forth throughout most of the second set, with SCC holding a lead as late as 17-16. But, another late ouotburst -- 9-2 this time -- proved to the be the difference for the Pirates as Gardner notched a kill and three service aces during the run.

In the third set, Coast didn't mess around and jumped out to an 11-3 advantage and never looked back. St. Laurent ripped four kills in the final set to pace the offense, while the Hawks struggled to find consistent offensive success.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Cypress College, beginning at 6 p.m.
