Pirates swept by Irvine Valley

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team lost in straight sets to visiting Irvine Valley, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Aubrey St. Laurent had six kills to lead the Pirates (7-12, 2-5), while Breanna Gardner added five kills and Hannah Del Barto chipped in four. Setter Megan Ritchie dished out 15 assists, while libero Sierra Lim notched 15 digs.

For the Lasers (8-4, 6-3), Taira Ka'awaloa led the way with eight kills, while Hannah Holder added six kills and Lucee Fitzgerald added five. Setter Alissa Blevins had 23 assists and the Lasers' earned 15 combined blocks throughout the night.

In the opening set, Coast stayed close with the Lasers and trailed 11-7 before IVC pulled away with a 6-1 run to make it 17-8.

In the second set, both teams traded blows as OCC grabbed a 15-14 lead on a St. Laurent kill. But IVC came storming back and used a 7-2 run to grab the lead for good. A kill by Tileree Johnson and an ace by Lim pulled the Pirates to within a pair at 21-19, but a pair of Coast errors paved the way for four straight point for the Lasers to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was another late run that burned the Pirates again as a manageable 16-13 IVC lead turned into 10-point advantage courtesy of 7-0 outburst by the Lasers.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Friday, Nov. 4 against Riverside City College, also at 6 p.m.
