Pirates trail early, fall to Rustlers, 12-5

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team put up a strong fight, but came up short against top-ranked Golden West College, 12-5, on Wednesday at the OCC swimming complex.

The Rustlers (18-0, 5-0 in the Orange Empire Conference), scored three goals in the first 92 seconds of the match and never looked back.

The Pirates (9-5, 2-3) made it 3-1 on a goal by Audrey Hung, but the GWC defense clamped down and did not allow another ball into its net until midway through the third quarter when Katelyn Hansen scored off an assist by Kellie Thorsness.

Thorsness added a pair of fourth-quarter goals, while Lauren Babb added a goal for the Pirates.

Melissa Bergesen had five goals and two assists to lead the Rustlers, while Brigitta Games and Megan Craig each added two goals.

The Pirates will return to action this weekend at the Long Beach City College Tournament.
