Pirates take 3-of-4 at Cuesta Tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team made the trek up the 101 Freeway and notched three wins out of four matches at the Cuesta College Women's Water Polo Tournament this past weekend.

It was a tough opener for the Pirates (8-4) on Friday, who fell to Riverside City College, 14-2, but Coast bounced back later in the day and topped Fullerton, 16-12. Against the Hornets, two of the top five goal scorers in the state were in the same pool as state leader Gabbi Perez of Fullerton (85 goals) paced her team with four goals. But, OCC standout Shawna Kedzie (fifth in the state with 52 goals) led all scorers with eight.

In the fourth quarter, with the Pirates holding onto a one-goal lead (13-12), goals by Lyric Soto, Laurin Semmelroth and Phoebe Barker gave Coast a much-needed cushion to hold on for the win.

On Saturday, Coast cruised past Foothill, 11-4, with Soto, Lexi Heyerly and Madelyn Hallstron each scoring two goals, while Kedzie, Barker, Leslie Franco, Hanna Jones and Sini White each added one.

In the finale, the Pirates topped host Cuesta, 9-5, with Kedzie once again leading the way with four goals. Barker and Semmelroth each notched a pair of goal, while White tossed in one goal.

OCC goalkeeper Rachelle Addam was solid throughout the weekend event, notching a tournament total of 17 saves.

The Pirates will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Cypress, beginning at 3 p.m.
