Pirates come out strong and top Olympians in SoCal Regional opener

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team came out fast and strong on Thursday en route to an 11-5 win over San Diego Mesa in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs, hosted by Golden West College.

Coast (12-10) jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first half of play and never looked back.

Shawna Kedzie paced the OCC attack with four goals, while Lyric Soto and Laurin Semmelroth each threw in two goals.

Goalie Rachelle Addam notched seven saves and did a solid job of keeping the defending state-champion Olympians (13-10) off of the scoreboard.

The Pirates will return to the GWC pool bright and early as they take on host Golden West at 10:15 a.m.
