Pirates survive late scare with 11-6 win over Vikings

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College baseball team overcame a rough seventh inning to post an 11-6 nonconference win over Long Beach City College on Tuesday afternoon at LBCC.

Josh Berman and Chris Ceballos each had two hits and two RBI for the Pirates (5-4), while Javier Rosales added a pair of hits, a run and an RBI.

Coast carried a comfortable 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Vikings (6-2) put a scare into the Pirates with five runs to cut the deficit to 7-6.

But the Pirates regrouped and pulled away from the Vikings with three more runs in the top of eighth. A costly LBCC error helped score the first run, before Domenic Donato came through with a big two-run single of his own.

Michael Giacone pitched five strong innings to pick up his first win of the season (1-1), allowing one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Jacob Collins calmed things down on the mound for Coast with two solid scoreless innings to wrap things up.

The Pirates and Vikings will wrap up their three-game season series on Wednesday at Wendell Pickens Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
