Pirates prevail in season series with 8-4 win over Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- A pair of four-run innings helped propel the Orange Coast College baseball team to an 8-4 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Golden West on Friday at Wendell Pickens Field to take the three-game series over the Rustlers, 2-1.

Ramiro Velasco went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI for the Pirates (14-10, 6-3 in OEC), while Murphy Stehly added a two-run double and Skylar Limonchi paced the offense with three hits from the top of the batting order.

Reliever Doug Magee (2-1) picked up the win, allowing just two runs (one earned) over the final 4 2/3 innings for OCC.

Coast got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch plated the first run for the Pirates before an RBI-single by Velasco made it 2-0. Two batters later, Stehly lined a double down the right-field line to score two more to give OCC a 4-0 advantage.

Golden West (12-12, 3-6) cut into the Pirate lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh to make it 4-3, before the Coast was able to deliver the knockout blow.

An error and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Coast with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Berman came through with a run-scoring single to center before Velasco brought in a pair with a two-run single to center, putting OCC up 7-4. One batter later, Berman would cap off the scoring when he came across on a wild pitch.

GWC's Luke Mattson (1-2) pitched well for 6 1/3 innings, but took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday at home against Oxnard, beginning at 2 p.m.
