Pirates demolish Dons to kick off OEC play

SANTA ANA -- After a sluggish and shaky nonconference portion of the 2018 season, the Orange Coast College baseball team turned the page and began the Orange Empire Conference portion of the campaign with a 13-2 rout over host Santa Ana on Tuesday at Don Sneddon Field.

The Pirates (9-7 overall, 1-0 in OEC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the bats produced 13 runs on 15 hits, while the OCC pitching staff kept the Dons (10-7, 0-1) quiet for most of the game.

Jacob Gentry went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, Ramiro Velasco went 3-fo-4 with three runs and two RBI and Josh Berman added two hits, three runs and an RBI for the Pirates. Coast pounded out seven doubles and home runs from Berman, Velasco and Jacob Doty en route to the win.

With the offense pounding the Dons' pitching staff, OCC starter Michael Giacone (2-1) took care of his end of the deal, holding the Dons to no runs on just three hits with four strikeouts over six strong innings.

Juan Gonzalez went 2-for-2 for the Dons, while Bryan Leef and Cage Massey each went 2-for-3. The rest of the Dons' batter went a combined 1-for-24.

The Pirates and Dons will play Game 2 of this three-game series on Thursday at OCC's Wendell Pickens Field (2 p.m.), with the series finale back at Santa Ana College on Saturday (12 p.m.).
