Pirates complete sweep with 16-11 win over Dons

SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team enjoyed the confines of Don Sneddon Field yet again as the Pirates pushed past Santa Ana College, 16-11, to complete the three-game sweep over the host Dons on Friday afternoon.

After pounding out 13 runs at SAC on Tuesday, Coast squeaked by the Dons, 2-1 on Thursday before the bats came back in a big way on Friday back at Santa Ana College.

The Dons (10-9, 0-3) opened things with a five-run first inning, but the Pirates (11-7, 3-0) answered right back with four in the top of the second and grabbed the lead with a six-run fifth.

In a game of back-and-forth, the Dons got back to within a run at 10-9 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but again, the Pirates padded their advantage in the top of the sixth with five more runs to make it 15-9. The Dons would not threaten the rest of the afternoon.

Coby Kauhaahaa went 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI for the Pirates, while Josh Berman added three hits and three runs. Ramiro Velasco and Landon Silver each went 1-for-5, but the duo combined for four runs scored and four RBI. Jacob Gentry continued his fine play with two hits, four runs and one RBI.

While the offense shined throughout the day, the pitching and defense for both squads took some lumps, thanks to a combined 10 errors (eight for Santa Ana), 14 unearned runs (nine for SAC) and 10 walks (five apiece).

The Pirates will open up a three-game series against Cypress College on Tuesday at OCC, beginning at 2 p.m.
