Ransom leads Pirates past Santa Ana

SANTA ANA -- Marquis Ransom scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Orange Coast College men's basketball team to a 78-70 win over Santa Ana College on Friday night.

It was a much-needed shot in the arm for the Pirates (11-14, 2-8 in Orange Empire Conference), who had dropped 10-of-11 entering Friday night's matchup with the Dons (15-9, 5-5).

OCC used a fast start to jump ahead of the Dons in the first half, leading by as many as 10 points before taking a 40-31 lead into the half.

Santa Ana, led by 16 points from Martin Kim and 14 points each from Cammie Lewis and Terryn Large, trimmed the deficit down to two with 8:29 left in the game.

But the Pirates would have an answer for the Santa Ana run and pushed their lead back up to seven with four minutes left and never looked back.

With the Dons fouling down the stretch, Coast calmly hit 24-of-27 from the free-throw line, led by Ransom, who knocked down 11-of-12. Robert Grepo, who added 12 points off of the bench, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe as well.

OCC will have the week off before returning to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at home against Cypress, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
