Pirates fall to Hornets in season finale

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team didn't end the season on a winning note, losing to visiting Fullerton College, 101-86, on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

In a game that "featured" a combined 68 fouls and a mind-boggling 101 free-throw attempts between the two schools, the Pirates (12-15, 3-9 in Orange Empire Conference) struggled right from the opening whistle and fell behind early.

After trailing by as many as 29 points in the game, a second-half run got the hosts to within earshot of the Hornets (13-14, 5-7) before the clock -- and the season -- ran out.

Jordan Pellum led Coast with 18 points. Marquis Ransom added 17 points and six rebounds, while Chris Nelson contributed 11 points.

For the Hornets, Julian Caldwell led all scorers with 27 points, five rebounds and five assists. Chris Lewis added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jason Payne added 16 points.

Tonight marked the final game in a Pirate uniform for six departing sophomores, Ransom, Jo Jo Trinidad, Broderick Dunlap, John Joyce, Dominique Nelson and Robert Grepo.
