Pirates kick off 2013 season with solid win

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College men's golf team came out strong at the season-opening Riverside Invitational and topped the 13-team event with a team score of 376 on Monday at Victoria Country Club.

OCC shot an impressive 376, 11 shots ahead of runner-up Cuyamaca and 12 ahead of third-place Cypress. College of the Desert (391) and El Camino (397) round out the top-five.

"Our first match went well," head coach Sean Collins said.  "It was a little cold, a bit of wind and some tough course conditions, but we are off to a good start."

The low round of the day went to Pirate standout Jem Young, who shot a 1-over-par 73. In fact, all six golfers were within four shots of each other, which shows the top-to-bottom depth of the Pirates in 2013.

Kyle Melchiorre and Michael Chen both carded a 75, while Marcus Mercado-Kiel came in with a 76 and Kyle Pollema and Riley Murphy each scored a 77.

The Pirates will compete in the two-round Orange Empire Conference Classic, which begins on Monday at 7 a.m. and will continue on Wednesday at 7 a.m. at Los Serranos Golf and Country Club in Chino Hills.
