Pirates sweep OEC in conference opener

SEAL BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's golf team continued its hot, all-around play, sweeping the field in the first Orange Empire Conference match of the season, played at the Navy Golf Course, par 72, on Wednesday.

Coast picks up seven wins with the sweep, shooting a team-best 364. Palomar (6-1) finished second with a 373, while Riverside (378) took third. Santiago Canyon (378), Saddleback (378), Cypress (390), Irvine Valley (397) and Cuyamaca (402) round out the team totals.

The depth of the Pirates once again came through as Kyle Melchiorre and Michael Chen each shot a 1-under-par 71 to lead the way. Marcus Mercado-Kiel was close behind his OCC teammates with a 73, David Pelekoudas scored a 74, Kyle Pollema carded a 75 and Riley Murphy posted a 76.

Low round of the day went to Saddleback's Drew Bradley, who carded a 2-under 70, but the consistently low scores up and down the Pirate lineup were too much to overcome.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday, March 11 at Sycuan GC for the next Orange Empire Conference matchup.
