Pirates win Tee-Off Classic

CHINO HILLS -- For the second time in as many events, the Orange Coast College men's golf team posted a winning formula and took home the top prize, winning the 2013 Tee-Off Classic at Los Serranos Golf Course on Monday and Wednesday.

Playing on the par-72 North Course on Monday and the par-74 South Course on Wednesday, the Pirates came in with a team score of 741 (366 on Monday, 375 on Wednesday), one shot better than fellow Orange Empire Conference rival Santiago Canyon (367-375=742). Glendale (760), Santa Barbara (772) and Palomar (776) round out the top five teams.

OCC's Kyle Melchiorre was the low medalist for the event, shooting a 3-under-par 143. On Monday, he carded a 1-under 71 on the North Course and followed that up with a 2-under 72 on the South Course. It's the second year in a row that Melchiorre has won this event.

Sophomore standout Marcus Mercado-Kiel notched a 149 (73-76), Kyle Pollema (73-77) and Riley Murphy (72-78) each carded a 150 and Jem Young totaled a 156 (77-79) for the Pirates.

"It was another great win for us," OCC head coach Sean Collins said. "We improved as a team in our second tournament and we're looking forward to a little fun in our next event."

That next event will be a two-man, best-ball event at Spring Valley Lakes in Victorville on Monday.

The Pirates will open up Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Rio Hondo Golf Course, beginning at 10 a.m.
