Pirates keep on rolling with 3-0 win over San Diego Mesa

COSTA MESA -- It was an impressive, all-around performance for the Orange Coast College men's soccer team as the Pirates rolled past visiting San Diego Mesa College, 3-0, on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Chase Bullock and Danny Vargas each scored goals for the Pirates (4-1-1), while Julian Madrigal dished out a pair of assists.

Backup goalkeeper Pablo Ramirez, who filled in for starter Thiago Lino Da Costa (flu), made four strong saves and notched his first career shutout victory in a Pirate uniform.

Coast scored first in the 15th minute on an "own goal" when a SD Mesa player accidentally headed an OCC shot attempt into their own goal. Three minutes later, the Pirates scored a more conventional goal when Madrigal slipped a nice pass to Bullock, who ripped a shot past Olympians' goalkeeper Alejandro Benavidez (nine saves) to put Coast up, 2-0.

It stayed that way for the rest of the first half, but just four minutes into the second half, Madrigal paired up with Vargas, who slipped a shot past Benavidez to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

Mesa had a few decent scoring opportunities, but the Ramirez and the rest of the OCC defense were up to the task and kept the Olympians off of the scoreboard for the entire afternoon, notching back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season.

OCC will travel to Chula Vista to take on Southwestern College on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m. before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex on Tuesday against San Diego City College, also at 3 p.m.
