Pirates eliminated from postseason with 4-1 loss to El Camino

NORWALK -- A rough start to the second half of play was enough to end the 2019 season for the Orange Coast College men's soccer team as a fantastic 2019 campaign was stopped in its tracks with a 4-1 loss to host El Camino in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Tuesday night at ECC's Murdock Stadium.

The fifth-seeded Pirates (13-4-5) took on the talented fourth-seeded Warriors (14-2-5) and matched a very fast team stride for stride early on in the first half. ECC had a couple of decent looks at goal early on, but a solid combination of passes by the Pirates earned the visitors a corner-kick opportunity. There, Jesus Flores sent the CK into the scoring area, where Julian Madrigal deflected the ball into the back of the net in the 22nd minute, putting the Pirates up, 1-0.

It stayed that way until the 35th minute, when an ECC flicker header by Kalya Silva found its way to Oliver Diaz, who side-kicked an attempt by the OCC defense and into the goal, tying the match at 1.

Early in the second half, a 10-minute barrage by the Warriors turned into three costly goals. In the 48th minute a misplayed throw in was banged in by Diaz for his second goal of the game, putting ECC up, 2-1.

Just over one minute later, Melvyn Perez-Cortez leaped high over the OCC defense and headed in a corner kick to make it 3-1.

The knockout blow came in the 57th minute when Silva noticed the Pirate goalkeeper out of position and launched a long-range shot goal into the back of the net to put the Warriors up, 4-1.

OCC's Pablo Ramirez had four saves, while ECC's Luis Garibay had three.

The Pirates' 13 wins were the most for one season since the 2012 club went 12-5-5.
