Pirates end season strong with 2-0 win at Santa Ana

SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team picked up a HUGE win on the road to close out Orange Empire Conference play, topping Santa Ana, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at SAC.

The win gave the Pirates (12-3-5, 6-2-4 in the Orange Empire Conference) a fighter's chance at the top spot in the conference standings. However, the Fullerton College Hornets, held off Golden West, 1-0, to edge out the Pirates for first place in the standings.

Fullerton (7-3-2 in conference) finishes with 23 points, one point ahead of OCC and two points up on Golden West.

But, with a strong road win against an above .500 team added to their resume, the Pirates should get a home matchup for the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. Playoff seedings will be announced next week, so check www.occpirateathletics.com for the latest playoff information as it becomes available.

OCC set the pace right from the opening whistle and just 1:19 into the game, Danny Vargas sent in a feed to teammate Matthew Ruiz, who buried his shot into the back of the net, putting Coast ahead, 1-0.

It stayed that way for most of the first half, until Vargas picked up a nice pass from Jesus Flores and scored in the 40th minute to make it 2-0.

That's all the Pirates would need the rest of the afternoon as the Dons managed 17 shots, but only had a handful of shots inside the goal frame. Pablo Ramirez earned the shutout win with four saves. SAC's Frank Aguilar had nine saves.
