Pirates hang on for 1-0 win over Irvine Valley

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer managed to ride a first-half goal all the way to the finish line as the Pirates slipped past Irvine Valley, 1-0, on Tuesday in a crucial Orange Empire Conference match played at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The first, last and only goal of the game came in the 40th minute when an OCC pass was sent into the box, where Julian Madrigal delivered a nice touch-pass to teammate Matthew Ruiz, who ripped a shot into the lower corner of the net, putting the Pirates (8-1-2, 2-0-1 in OEC) up for good.

After controlling play for the majority of the first half and the early minutes of the second half, IVC (4-4-5, 0-2-1) turned things around a bit and controlled the action. IVC outshot the Pirates, 9-6 in the second half, but the majority of their chances sailed wide of the net, or over the net.

The best chance for the Lasers came in the final minutes of play when Dowan Kim ripped a shot on frame, but OCC goalkeeper Pablo Ramirez controlled the shot and didn't allow a second chance. Ramirez finished with six saves. IVC goalkeeper Nathan King notched nine.

OCC will have a big match coming up on Friday ... at rival Golden West ... beginning at 3 p.m. The Pirates return to the OCC Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 18 against Santiago Canyon, also at 3 p.m.
